Later, the stoa was built over the reservoir and consisted of two rows of Doric columns with rooms for shops or lodgings in the rear.
FILERIMOS - BUTTERFLY VALLEY
Filerimos is located on a hill above Ialyssos 10 km from Rhodes town. The 5th century Byzantine Monastery is partly obscured by the vegetation and the many tall, graceful trees on the hilltop. You have to walk up some steps to get to the Monastery. On the same site and part of the group of buildings is the church of the Virgin Mary, which consists of four chapels, all beautifully and suitably adorned and decorated with centuries-old wall frescoes. Another interesting features at Filerimos is the path of Golgotha, one of the most significant moments in biblical history, in which Jesus, bearing the heavy cross on his shoulders walked a brutal and agonising path to his death. On top of this path, up on a hill there is a huge cross with an amazing view.
After leaving Filerimos we continue to drive on west coast of the island, viewing diversified villages to reach the Valley of Butterflies. The valley is one of the nature's most beautiful gifts to Rhodes. Within the forest there are shady paths, small waterfall and lakes decorated by waterlilies.
